Psilocybin Microdosing

What Is Microdosing?

Microdosing is all about taking a hallucinogen without feeling its characteristic psychedelic effects. That means microdosing involves taking such a small dose that there's no tripping out in any way, shape, or form.

Instead, microdosing is meant to take advantage of the supposed mental health benefits of psychedelics without having to trip. After all, hallucinogens like magic mushrooms have been shown to decrease anxiety and depression, make one more open, and enhance mood.

Microdosing tries to take advantage of these positive benefits and apply them to daily life. It's thought that one can integrate microdosing to become more organized, social, productive, and creative while feeling less anxious or depressed.

History of Microdosing

The modern idea of microdosing can be attributed to the creator of LSD itself—Albert Hofmann. In a now-lost interview, Hofmann mentioned taking 'low doses' of LSD to enhance his time in nature and even suggested that it could be beneficial for ADHD.

Yet, James Fadiman is the most associated with creating the concept of microdosing. Fadiman has spent much of his time researching microdosing and gathering evidence throughout the decades since the 1960s.

Then, he wrote a hit book called The Psychedelic Explorer's Guide: Safe, Therapeutic, and Sacred Journeys. In his book, Fadiman explores microdosing from individual reports and his own experiences.

From then on, microdosing caught on and exploded in popularity as people began experimenting with microdosing. Now, microdosing has become a starting point for people starting their first steps into psychedelics or those who want greater well-being.

Microdosing With Psilocybin

Although much of the initial exploration of microdosing was with LSD, psilocybin has become the preferred microdosing psychedelic. That's because psilocybin is found readily within magic mushrooms.

Magic mushrooms have several advantages, such as being natural, easy to grow, and simple to prepare and dose.

How to Microdose With Psilocybin

Researchers have found that a microdose is anything from 0.1 to 0.5 grams of dry magic mushrooms. Although the generally accepted sub-threshold dose is somewhere less than 0.25 grams.

However, what works for most people is a dry mushroom dose of around 0.1 grams (or 100 milligrams). The easiest way to prepare such a dose is to grow or get ahold of dehydrated magic mushrooms and pack them into capsules.

We recommend using Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms since this species is often not too strong, except for a few variants.

Once you have your dry magic mushrooms handy, you want to get them as fine as possible. Use a coffee grinder, blender, or cannabis grinder to get all the mushrooms as close to a powder as you can.

Once done, weigh out 0.1 grams on a scale and pack the psilocybin mushroom powder into an empty capsule. Your microdose is now ready to go.

All you need to do is swallow one microdose capsule during the days when you take a microdose.

Which Microdosing Schedule Should I Follow?

Remember, microdosing is all about following a strict schedule. We recommend sticking with one of the popular plans by Fadiman or Stamets.

The Fadiman protocol calls for microdosing one day and then taking two days off—then repeat. That means in one week, you'll microdose only a few times.

Another popular protocol is by famous mycologist Paul Stamets. Stamets recommends microdosing for four days straight before taking a three-day break to complete one week.

You must follow a microdosing schedule consistently without deviating too much. Start out by trying a protocol for a few weeks and note how you feel throughout the week.

Only change to a new schedule once you've tried one for at least a few weeks. Don't vary your microdosing schedule too much too soon.

It's also essential to have at least a two-day break period during any week. The body quickly builds up a tolerance to psilocybin, so having days off is necessary to keep the microdoses effective.

Remember to be consistent and take your microdose roughly around the same time each day. It's recommended to consume a microdose in the morning since even small amounts of psilocybin can be stimulating and may make it difficult to sleep.

What Does the Research Say About Psilocybin Microdosing?

Use this text to share information about your store with your customers. There's plenty of research on the effects of large doses of psilocybin, but what about microdosing? Currently, there aren't many clinical or professional research articles about microdosing.

However, the research that has been performed on microdosing seems to be inconclusive. Some of the most substantial articles on microdosing are anecdotal reports.

Basically, these studies asked anonymous people online about their microdosing habits and had them fill out a questionnaire. One such study in 2019 found that microdosing mostly improved mood and focus.

Most respondents in the study also found that the most common downsides were discomfort and increased anxiety.

Another anecdotal study was performed with 81 participants online in 2021. They found that microdosing increased psychological well-being, social connectedness, and emotional stability.

Yet, the main takeaway was that those who had a positive response were those who expected to have a positive response. The researchers suggested that this might be due to a strong placebo effect.

Then, in 2022, a real double-blind clinical trial was completed using psilocybin mushrooms. The study found that psilocybin microdosing had no impact on well-being or other positive psychological benefits.

Of course, this is only one study with a small sample size of 34 participants over two weeks. Other studies are now ongoing, which may provide different conclusions.escribe products, share announcements, or welcome customers to your store.

The Legality of Psilocybin Microdosing

Before you head off to start microdosing, you should be sure about your local magic mushroom laws. In many places, it's illegal to purchase and cultivate magic mushrooms.

However, magic mushroom laws have started to shift in recent years. Some cities in the US and the entire state of Oregon have begun decriminalizing psilocybin mushrooms.

In Europe, magic mushroom 'truffles' are legal only in the Netherlands and decriminalized in Portugal.

Those who don't want to risk growing or buying psychedelics will often head to a psychedelic-friendly country. Popular destinations include Jamaica, Brazil, and Peru.

Be Mindful of Your Microdose

When you begin microdosing, it's essential to be mindful. Keep a journal or word file and take notice of any changes in mood, well-being, anxiety, productivity, and creativity on your on and off days.

The most significant benefit of microdosing is paying attention to your thoughts and emotions daily. That way, you can notice more about yourself and the world around you.

That can lead you to discover what triggers your anxieties, when you're most productive, how good it feels to be social, and how your emotions shift on a day-to-day basis.

In fact, one study suggests that mindfulness may be the key to getting the benefits of microdosing. Perhaps it's the awareness and mindfulness from microdosing that is genuinely beneficial.
